We are seeking a part-time position (10-20 hrs/wk) with the tentative title Director of Partnerships and Operations. Applications are due by September 13 (see instructions at end).


Who we are: We have been incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in the US since 2017. We are commonly known as “recovers.org” because we build, host and distribute the free recovers.org organizing platform to communities preparing for and recovering from disasters. This platform can launch in any area before or after a disaster, and collect information regarding needs, donations and volunteers. This information is confidentially shared only with local trusted organizations active in disaster recovery. Their staff and volunteers work to match needs with free goods and services in the community. The public facing page of the platform also allows trusted organizations to use a shared clearinghouse of information: announcements about events, volunteer opportunities, shelter details, grant applications, and more. Job description: This is a part-time role, which can be performed remotely with flexible hours. We seek someone who can work 10-20 hours per week for at least 8 months, with the potential to work more if the candidate is a good fit and we fundraise successfully. Raising enough money for a full-time position is one of the goals of this part-time position, and the candidate may be invited to assume a full-time role as soon as funds allow. The position will entail managing the day-to-day operations of the nonprofit, with support and guidance from board members. This work is currently carried out primarily by the volunteer President of SRC, who will be available to help train and teach the required skills.

Operations include:

  • Respond to inquiries from community members about how the platform works and troubleshoot as needed. This requires a mastery of how the platform works, including every feature.

  • Help set up new community platforms.

  • Help vet new community organizations for potential “trusted” status.

  • Replicate platform bug reports from community members, and convey them to SRC board members and the software engineering contractor.

  • Seek grant opportunities from foundations and corporations, and apply for grants.

  • Build regional and state partnerships with coalitions of disaster-focused organizations, such as VOAD.

  • Rapid response whenever possible during active, fast-moving post-disaster periods where a community has decided to use our platform.

  • Virtual training of community leaders in how to use the platform; demo walk-throughs and troubleshooting.

  • Communicate progress, questions and concerns regularly with board members.

  • Regular posts across our social media platforms: Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Bluesky;

The successful candidate will become an expert in community-powered disaster recovery and resilience. They will become adept at navigating between small (local volunteer groups, faith communities) and large (national and international nonprofits active in disaster response) organizations; local, state, and federal governments; and communities impacted by disasters. The SRC board will provide sufficient training and network opportunities during paid time to allow the candidate to become a leader in this space.

Hourly rate: Nominally $40 USD/hr. However, employment will begin with a probationary period at a rate of $30 USD/hr for a number of weeks mutually agreed upon by the employee and the SRC board, which will be determined based on the employee’s previous experience and qualifications.

This is an at-will position.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a bachelors degree.

  • Clear written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to draft clear and appealing presentations, grant proposals and training materials.

  • Passionate about the SRC mission.

Preferred but not necessary qualifications:

  • Bilingual.

  • Experience living in more than one country.

  • Some community organizing experience in any sphere, e.g. civil rights, elections, disability rights, health equity, LGBTQIA+ rights, immigrant rights, environmental conservation, etc.

Qualities (these can be taught on-the-job):

  • Must be good at respectfully and compassionately troubleshooting technical issues experienced by community members who have little experience using web platforms, and/or who are overwhelmed by disaster conditions.

  • Must be able to firmly adhere to SRC’s operating principles while sensitively balancing the competing needs and priorities of different stakeholders in a disaster recovery arena.

Note regarding ChatGPT: A lot of this work involves written communication that explains the disaster recovery ecosystem, community resilience, and our own policies and practices to people. We have a unique perspective and do things in a unique way as an organization, and ChatGPT or a similar genAI tool cannot mimic what we need to convey to our communities. It is not possible to rely on an LLM (large language model) for writing or other content creation, and then be useful on one’s feet during high-stakes live conversations. Therefore we have a mandatory expectation that ChatGPT and similar tools are NOT used for communication or any text generation. The ability to write clearly and independently is a core requirement of the position. We will help guide tone and content with paid training in the early period of the position to ensure uniformity with our organization.
